Join us on Saturday, February 6, at UCLA School of Law for UnCommon Law's annual Lifer School, a full-day, interactive educational symposium dedicated to demystifying California's discretionary complex parole process, providing practical tools and resources for those navigating the system, and deepening understanding of parole-related issues and reform efforts.

In partnership with the UCLA Prison Law & Policy Program and the UCLA Criminal Law & Policy Consortium, we're bringing together legal expertise, trauma-informed practices, and the leadership of people with lived experience for a day of learning, connection, and advocacy.

Registration for Lifer School will be open soon!

Please note: This year's Lifer School will not be livestreamed or recorded. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone is welcome! Lifer School is designed for family members, loved ones, advocates, legal professionals, and community members who want to better understand California's parole process, support incarcerated people navigating the system, and get involved in parole-related advocacy and reform efforts.

Whether you're supporting a loved one preparing for a parole hearing, working directly with incarcerated people, or advocating for a more just parole system, Lifer School offers practical knowledge, valuable resources, and opportunities to connect with others navigating, supporting, and advocating within California's parole system.

What to Expect

Throughout the day, UnCommon Law's experienced parole attorneys and advocates will lead educational presentations, a realistic mock parole hearing demonstration, and interactive workshops designed to help participants better understand and navigate California's parole system.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the parole process: Learn how California's parole system works, how decisions are made, and what to expect during a parole hearing.

  • Experience a mock parole hearing: See how a parole hearing unfolds through a realistic demonstration that brings the process to life.

  • Participate in specialized workshops: Choose from sessions focused on parole representation, supporting incarcerated loved ones, emerging parole issues, and legislative advocacy.

  • Connect with attorneys, advocates, and community members: Ask questions, exchange knowledge, access helpful resources, and build connections with others working to advance parole reform.

MCLE credits

UnCommon Law’s application for California MCLE credit is pending approval. Pending Bar approval, up to 4.25 credits can be awarded to attorneys.
