Welcoming New Director of Policy & Advocacy to UnCommon Law

Dear Community, 

As we navigate a pivotal moment in our organization’s journey, and in this critical time socially and politically, we remain committed to advancing bold, transformative change. We are meeting this moment by welcoming the final addition to our leadership team: Kamau Butcher, UnCommon Law’s new Director of Policy and Advocacy. 

Kamau is an attorney, organizer and seasoned policy professional with extensive experience in advancing decarceral policies and building powerful campaigns. Most recently, he served as Director at the People’s Coalition for Safety and Freedom, where he led campaign strategy, policy development, and strategic relationship-building. His leadership was instrumental in challenging the 1994 Crime Bill and advocating for investments in community care and safety. 

Kamau will lead UnCommon Law’s policy and advocacy strategy, guide our narrative and legislative efforts, build strategic partnerships, and play a key role in how we tell our story. His expertise and values align deeply with UnCommon Law’s mission, and I look forward to the strategic insight he will bring to this next chapter.
